The short version: JOTECS does not set any cookies. The longer version โ what cookies are, what we don't set, what third-party services do, and how to disable cookies if you want to be extra cautious โ is below.
1. What a cookie is
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store on your device, then reads back on subsequent visits. Cookies are used for session management (keeping you logged in), remembering preferences, and โ controversially โ for cross-site tracking. There are also local storage items, which serve a similar purpose but aren't sent to the server with every request.
2. Cookies set by JOTECS
None. JOTECS sets no cookies of any kind. The site also does not use window.localStorage or window.sessionStorage. Your visit is stateless.
3. Third-party cookies
JOTECS does not embed third-party content that sets cookies. Specifically:
- No Google Analytics, Matomo, Plausible, or other analytics.
- No advertising networks, retargeting pixels, or social-media embeds.
- No YouTube or Vimeo video embeds (which would set cookies).
- No third-party comment systems, chat widgets, or social-login providers.
Google Fonts is loaded from fonts.googleapis.com. That request does not set cookies for our site's purposes; Google may log the request independently as part of operating its CDN, governed by Google's privacy policy. We do not receive any of that information.
4. Cookies set by Formspree
When you submit the submission form or the contact form, your browser briefly interacts with formspree.io (the form action target). Formspree may set its own cookies on its own domain during that submission flow. Those cookies are scoped to formspree.io and do not persist on jotecs.org. Formspree's cookie use is governed by Formspree's privacy policy.
5. Browser-level cookie control
If you want to be extra cautious, all modern browsers let you disable cookies, block third-party cookies, or clear cookies on demand. Instructions for the major browsers:
- Chrome โ Settings โ Privacy and security โ Cookies and other site data.
- Firefox โ Preferences โ Privacy & Security โ Cookies and Site Data.
- Safari โ Preferences โ Privacy โ Manage Website Data.
- Edge โ Settings โ Cookies and site permissions โ Cookies and site data.
Disabling cookies will not affect your ability to use JOTECS โ the site works the same with cookies disabled.
6. Do Not Track
JOTECS honours the Do Not Track (DNT) browser signal. Since we don't track visitors in the first place, the DNT signal has no effect on our behaviour โ but if we ever add any third-party service that does set cookies, we will configure it to honour DNT.
7. Changes to this policy
If we ever change this cookies policy โ for example, if we add a new feature that requires cookies โ we will update this page, bump the "last updated" date below, and (if the change is material) note it on the home page for at least 30 days.
8. Contact
Questions about cookies on this site should be sent to editor@jotecs.org.
